Why We Have Re-Registered as an Incorporated Society
Our club has recently re-registered under the new Incorporated Societies Act.
This step was not optional. All incorporated societies in New Zealand are required to re-register under the updated legislation introduced through the Incorporated Societies Act 2022. The previous Act dated back to 1908 and no longer reflected modern governance standards or the way community organisations operate today.
What This Means
Re-registration ensures that:
- Our club continues to exist as a legal entity
- Committee members are protected when acting in good faith
- We meet current legal and financial reporting standards
- Our rules are clear, transparent, and up to date
- Have a minimum number of members
- Maintain a clear constitution (updated from what was previously called “rules”)
- Define committee duties and conflict of interest processes
- Provide fair procedures for resolving disputes
- Keep appropriate financial records
As a long-standing club, we are committed to operating with integrity, transparency, and good governance. Re-registering ensures we:
- Remain eligible to hold funds, enter contracts, and organise events
- Continue to be recognised by relevant national bodies
- Provide confidence to members, sponsors, and supporters
- Protect the volunteers who serve on our committee
It simply ensures that our structure meets modern legal standards and positions the club well for the future.
